St Cuthberts

This morning dawned cold and cloudy, which is my favourite weather and a welcome relief after the recent heatwave. So armed with fresh energy, Max and I went for a stroll around the neighbourhood. This time we headed up the hill, and were busy taking a few shots of the beautiful old St Cuthbert's Church for our Port Elizabeth Daily Photo blog.

The caretaker spotted us, and kindly offered to let us in to photograph the interior, which I was delighted about, because the church has some wonderful stained glass windows.

It also has beautiful wooden rafters supporting the steep roof.

This little roof was copper until last week, when our proverbial local thieves stole it and necessitated its replacement with corrogated iron...grrrrrrrrr!.
I have a thing about the endless variety of old stone crosses in our area, these added to my collection of photos of them!
With so many of our old heritage sites being left to decay, it is delightful to come across one that is being cherished and cared for so lovingly!

I guess thieves are the same the world over concerning the copper. Sure is a beautiful little church, especially those windows. I really like the wooden rafter photo.

I do agree with that, it really saddens me. What I liked about this post was the caretaker let you inside to take the pictures, is kindness was not altered by the theft of the copper... says a lot about the man and his church.

Just love the rafters. They add real character to the beautiful old church, and give real perspective to the photo.

That church is absolutely amazing. The stained glass had me at first sight...and those rafters...Wow! Beautiful shots!

Funny about the copper....we had theives recently think they were stealing copper....and they were actually pulling up fiber optic cable that ran the television....thousands in our area lost TV that day.

you are right Tom, it was very kind of him, especially given how cautious everyone has to be about crime these days!
