Waiting..............

They say the first 24 hours are critical. When I phoned ICU a few minutes ago, they said "he's fairly stable."
I said " not VERY stable, just FAIRLY stable???"
She said" what is very stable? This is the first 24 hours, he is fairly stable..."

And so it goes... the waiting for the critical period to be over. As they are very strict about visiting hours, much of it takes place in the silence of an empty waiting room, while the rest of the hospital bustles around outside the door.

Well, 'fairly stable' is good, for now. Better than the news the people in the bed next door had, as I came in to see him, 3 hours after he came out of surgery, when he was due to be taken off the breathing apparatus.

I was calm until then, this has become a routine operation, yes? Every second person you speak to knows someone who has a new lease on life, "oh he had a quintuple, and you should see him now..." But the lady in the bed next door did not make it.

I had seen them wheeling her out of theatre, just as I was waiting to go in and see Max as soon as he had been settled in. Now the curtains were drawn around the bed, and the family were sobbing and praying loudly, and a thin curtain separated them from me and this man I love so much, lying pale on the bed. And I was face to face with the reality that, clever as the doctors are, and as far as medical science has advanced, it will NEVER be routine to have your chest sawn open, and people ferreting around in your chest cavity!

So I am grateful for "fairly stable".... and I will continue to wait........

You're right - 'fairly stable' is good. 'Fairly stable' means 'very stable' is next. And then 'well'. I hope you are not waiting alone.

Hi K, well, I am waiting alone, but not in spirit, as I am surrounded by a cloud of well wishes, which is a huge help. But by choice, I find I am stronger waiting alone. I have my odd meltdown in the car or the waiting room, and then go back in, all strong and serene for Max. If the kids were with me, I'd also be worried about protecting them from seeing me lose it, and it would be even more draining. They are worried enough about their dad without me passing any extra doubts or fears on! So it works for me like this... till the critical part is over.

Oh, I hope by now this post is hours old and Max is "very" stable and getting more and more so by the hour! Hugs and prayers to all

So happy to hear that Max is "fairly stable"; considering the alternative, that is GREAT news! Get some rest now!!

It's a lonely place, a hospital waiting room, even when you are surrounded by people. I hope Max is now feeling much better, as this was posted some hours ago.
In the circumstances I think fairly stable is good, don't you. Every hour will mark an improvement.
We are all with you in spirit dear girl, keep us posted..
hugs to you both

Suzi-k, thanks for the update on Max-e conditions - it is appreciated. Please wish him fast recovery, he is already missed. Unfortunately, I just found out, I guess I don't have that kind of addiction to blogging, lol, as I can go on for days from blogging. But let him know that we are praying for him, and not to forget best wishes to the family, because sometimes we forget how stressful it can be. Anna :)

The chairs in the waiting room are the same as we have in our local hospital here in UK! The room looks the same, so impersonal.
Asyou sit in the chair, know we are sitting here in our chairs thinking of you both.

The only 'R' we want from Max is a complete 'Recovery'.

It's amazing to remember how S.A. was the pioneer in heart surgery so surely that gives great confidence.

Thinking of you both.
